This year's categories:
Ocean Fauna - Fauna is described as the animals of an environment or region. Therefore, any animal of the sea is allowed to be submitted for this category, with the exception of whales as they are a seperate category for this year. Common fauna submissions can include a singular fish of a species or a school of fish of that species, but only one specific genus or species can be considered in an image containing multiple. Images containing multiple of the same species are not inherently better, as they can have clutter. Winning submissions usually have images that showcase unique individuals of the ecosystem in a interesting camera perspective.
Ocean Flora - Flora is described as the plants of an environment or region. THerefore, any plants of the sea are allowed to be submitted for this category. Plants that harbor the most interest commonly include coral, as there are thousands of different genus or species of coral specific to different regions of the world. This is the easiest category to find your own niche in due to this fact. However, it is to be noted that coral is not the only thing to be allowed, as other plants are allowed as well. Common plants outside of coral that are submitted include seagrass and different kinds of moss or algae.
Whales - Whales are the largest animals of the seas, which leads to them having little diversity due to their difficulty to maintain a growing population. Therefore, a key factor of this category to win will most likely be perspective, liveliness, and uniqueness. Perspective shots can completely shift the tone of an image. Liveliness can be shown through a whale following an action such as breaching the water, consuming krill/algae, or blowing water through its blowhole. Uniquness can be found in rare whale species being documented or being found at depths uncommon for normal whale photography to be taken place
