Bronx is one of the five main boroughs of New York City, having a population of over 1.3 million residents. It, unlike the other boroughs, is not directly on the island that most of New York City resides in, and instead is in the mainland United States. The name "Bronx" was derived from Jonas Bronck, who made the first European settlement in the region in 1639, which was home to multiple immigrants from Europe, mainly Irish, German, and East European. This came at the cost of displacing the Native American LEnape tribes present in the region.
Bronx's culture in our modern era primarily is based on its evoltuion in the musical genre of Hip-Hop, with most considering it as the birthplace of the genre. This wave of Hip-Hop began in the 1970s following a decline in population and living conditions of the borough. This culminated to a suspected attempt at insurance fraud by landlords as they may have burned down multiple low-income housings they owned to collect the insurance claim as it was possibly more worthwhile to them. In the 80s, the Bronx was met with large-scale government revitilization efforts which has brought it back to a comfortable standard for today.
